According to the new study, doing prostate gland blood tests can reduce the need for half of the biopsies. The blood tests for prostate cancer case can help you differentiate between the slow-growing and rapidly increasing cancer cells as it removes the doubt that forces several men to go through the painful procedures of biopsy. The researchers from the USA concluded that the potential replacement for the PSA blood tests that are used on NHS is important and can help reduce the need for unnecessary biopsies.

This can be considered wrong at times as well because the increased PSA protein levels that it shows actually detects an enlarged prostate or slowly-developing and low at risk cancer cells in the body. Researchers believe that the new test can collect the proteins having the same characteristics as that of PSA which have been significantly altered by cancer. There were two trials made in this regard taking 384 men that explained that it prevented up to 47 percent of the biopsy cases that would have been done after the PSA test.

Biopsies are done in order to confirm the diagnosis of prostate cancer in men but at the same time, it also causes severe pain, bleeding and get you into the risks of blood infections as well. The side-effects of a man with prostate cancer consist of burning or pain while urinating, difficulty in urination, loss of bladder control, blood in urine, etc. The most common test doctors prescribe the patients with symptoms of prostate cancer is a PSA test that is followed by an MRI scan. The MRI scan is yet not available in most parts of Britain till date.

This is an advance over existing tests and our ability to accurately predict the presence of higher-grade cancers so that we can avoid biopsies in men at lower risk, said Dr. Eric Klien from Cleveland Clinic who conducted the trials presented at the American Urological Association conference. According to Dr. Lain Frame who is the director of research at the Prostate Cancer UK, these results are a promising step forward but having said that, it is a small-scale study and the team would have to see the test that is used on many more men before getting into further conclusions.
